I stumbled upon the the
soda fountain and boutique last week while visiting Durham, North Carolina. Nestled on 9th Street adjacent to the Duke East Campus the Ox and Rabbit brilliantly combines old school charm with a contemporary eye for product and design. I was hooked.....
First you must belly up to the soda fountain to decide on the best combination of flavors for your fresh made soda or milk shake. I went with Blackberry Ginger ale. As if that couldn't get any better they also pour your drink over that perfect kind of ice....you know those little round pellets.
With drink in hand you have to tinker around the shop. The owners have great taste. Primarily selling paper and gifts they represent everything from local artists to Jonathan Adler. They display their finds on re purposed fixtures like an old Dr. Scholls peg board and a vintage fridge.
Beyond the natural charm of the Ox and Rabbit their story adds to the formula. The building had once been the McDonald's Drug Store a staple in the area for several decades. A few years after McDonald's went out of business the current owners opened their store in the same space. Keeping true to tradition the Soda Fountain remained and the pharmacy was replaced with the store. If that's not keeping it local I don't know what is!
